The Herman W. Lay Physical Activities Center, or PAC, is the hub of student fitness and recreational programs and activities on the campus of Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. At Furman, the Herman W. Lay Physical Activities Center is a major part of student life. It's the ideal place to get the mind off of schoolwork and break a sweat. Yet this comprehensive fitness center is a fairly new addition to the 188-year old campus. When the fitness center was first built around 1989, it had only two stationary bicycles for students who could not run. The health science class, "Wellness Concepts," which is still a popular class offered at the university today, consisted solely of outdoor running. With a small budget of $2,000, new equipment (a rowing machine, a stair-climber and a resistance training machine) was eventually added to the fitness center. Officially opened in 1994, the fitness center began offering a small number of memberships for the use of the Furman community. The needs and wants for a more versatile fitness center grew on campus and in the late months of 2007, the fitness center began a massive expansion and revamp of the facility. The fitness center today is two levels and includes a plethora of new equipment, a new therapy pool and salt water sanitation system, air-conditioned locker rooms, a card and keypad-controlled entranceway and an expanded dance studio, which offers a wide variety of group exercise classes.

The PAC, shortened for Physical Activities Center, is named after businessman and Furman alum, Herman W. Lay. Lay. He attended Furman for two years in 1926 and 1928 but left to pursue business opportunities in order to make money. Eventually, after some years making a name for himself in the food company business, he established his own company, the H.W. Lay and Company. Perhaps Lay rings a bell? His company sold the renowned Lay's potato chips and other snacks. Further growth of the company led to the establishment of the Frito-Lay Inc., in 1962, "a national snack and convenience food company." Naming the PAC in honor of Herman Lay is fitting, as he was very involved in his alma mater. Lay was a charter member of the university advisory council, former chairman of the council, a national co-chairman of Furman's Program for Greatness and in 1967, he received a Doctor of Laws degree from Furman.5 Herman W. Lay's career is certainly notable, even among the many successful Furman University alumni.
