Construction of Holliday Hall began in 1932, as the campus was in need of a gymnasium and basketball court. The Hall was built directly adjacent to Hendricks Field (now Kidd Field), the football field. The construction of the facility was uncommon in that the entire building cost was paid for by El Paso County. The county was building a highway that went through the College campus in which the county supplied the materials and the labor was paid for through federal funds. Every bit of the construction, including the blasting of the site, occurred at no cost to the College. Dean C.A. Puckett commented, “So, there was the road, the retaining wall, and Holliday Hall- all built and charged to the County.”
Completed in 1933, Holliday Hall was named after Robert L. Holliday, El Paso attorney and a member of the UT Board of Regents from 1927-1933. Robert Holliday was one of the individuals responsible for saving the College of Mines and Metallurgy (now UTEP) in 1933 when Senator W.R. Poage submitted a bill that called for the closure of eight Texas Colleges. Holliday and other supporters of the College traveled to Austin where their endeavors proved successful. The Hall was designed to complement the Bhutanese architectural design of the College’s other buildings. The gym was often used to host student dances, graduation ceremonies, registration, and various other student events. Primarily, Holliday Hall was the home of the Miner Basketball teams from 1933 until Memorial Gym opened in 1961. After the basketball program left the building it was renovated to facilitate offices for Track and Field and Gymnastics; the gymnasium was used by the short-lived gymnastics program.
At present Holliday Hall houses the offices, training rooms, locker rooms, and lounge for the Miner Track and Field and Cross Country programs. The gymnasium is used for various student and community activities such as Physical Education classes, cheerleader camps, and student organization basketball games. |
