South High School

Opened: January 1, 1901
Built at 14 Richards St. in 1900, the first South High opened a year later in 1901, amidst the French and Irish neighborhoods that once took up the lower part of Main South.

Over the years, South High came into its own, forming an academic rivalry with the defunct Classical High School and an athletic rivalry with North High School. It also boasted several famous alums, from one of the early pioneers of rocketry, Robert Goddard, to aviator Edwin Eugene Aldrin Sr., whose son, Buzz, would go on to make his own mark in space exploration.

Students at South would gather in "Houligan's Corner" in the basement, and would go out after school with a date to "White House, Hot Dog Annie's, Easton's or the Speedway," according to a Worcester Telegram account in the 1970s.

But South High eventually outgrew its Richards Street home, and by the late 1960s, city and school leaders were making plans to build a new home for it, eventually settling on a pitch of land off of Apricot Street. That new South High opened in 1978, and has remained there up until 2021, when it will be knocked down to make way for the new high school opening at the same location.
