Jackson Memorial Hall is at 415 Letcher Ave. at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI). It is the assembly hall and VMI's museum. The hall was named after General Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson and houses a collection of his memorabilia. Jackson became an instructor at VMI in 1851 in artillery tactics and cadet training. The hall is dominated by an oil painting depicting the VMI cadet charge at the Battle of New Market. It was painted by Benjamin West Clinedinst, class of 1880. The flags around the hall represent the 26 states in the Union when VMI was founded Nov. 11, 1839.
